CSI Financial Services, LLC (“ClearBalance”) Data Breach

On April 26, 2021, CSI Financial Services, LLC (“ClearBalance”) became aware of an attempted unauthorized wire transfer of funds within its network. Upon learning of the incident, ClearBalance engaged a forensic investigator to determine the size and scope of the incident. Through investigation, it was determined that an unauthorized party gained access to ClearBalance employee email accounts between March 8, 2021 and April 26, 2021 containing the private information of ClearBalance customers.
Finally, months after the incident, on July 9, 2021, ClearBalance reported to the California Attorney General’s office that between March 8, 2021 and April 26, 2021, an unauthorized party gained access to ClearBalance’s network and gained access to customer information.
WHAT INFORMATION WAS INVOLVED?
On July 9, 2021, ClearBalance began sending out written notices to 209,719 customers, notifying them of the data breach. The letters listed the following affected information:
- Names
- Tax IDs
- Social Security numbers
- Dates of Birth
- Government-issued IDs
- Telephone Numbers
- Full-face Photographic Images
- Personal Banking Information (financial institution names, account numbers and routing numbers)
- Healthcare Account numbers and balances
- Dates of Services
- ClearBalance loan numbers and balances
- Clinical Information
- Health Insurance Information
San Diego, CA-based CSI Financial Services, LLC (“ClearBalance”), was founded in 2012 to offer patient financing programs for loans made by banks to patients of hospitals or healthcare providers to finance medical expenses. ClearBalance has served more than 4 million patient accounts at hundreds of healthcare organizations nationwide.
