​​​​​​​​On May 16, 2025, Hunter Health Clinic (“Hunter Health”) reported a significant data breach to the Maine Attorney General’s Office. The incident, which occurred between September 27 and September 30, 2024, involved unauthorized access to an employee’s email account (the “Data Breach”). Upon discovering the Data Breach on September 30, 2024, Hunter Health engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate. The investigation concluded on May 1, 2025, revealing that sensitive personal and health information had been compromised. Approximately 31,778 individuals have been impacted by this Data Breach. 

Recently, Hunter Health has begun sending data breach notification letters to affected individuals. If you received a data breach notification letter from Hunter Health, it indicates that your information was affected by the Data Breach.

Hunter Health Clinic is a nonprofit healthcare provider based in Wichita, Kansas. Founded in 1976 by Dr. Vernon Dyer, a Choctaw and Prairie Band Potawatomi OB/GYN physician, Hunter Health was established to provide culturally relevant healthcare services tailored to the Urban Native American community of Wichita. Today, Hunter Health offers an array of services to patients, including medical, dental, vision, pharmacy, behavioral health, and health education services. The organization employs over 50 individuals and operates multiple locations in Wichita. 

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED IN THE HUNTER HEALTH CLINIC DATA BREACH?

Hunter Health Clinic Data BreachThe types of information compromised vary by individual but may include the following: 

  • Full names,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • Dates of birth,
  • Driver’s license numbers, 
  • State identification and/or other government identification numbers,
  • Financial account information,
  • Medical and clinical information,
  • Patient account numbers,
  • Health insurance information. 

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity. 

Personal medical information (a specific type of PII) is referred to as Protected Health Information (“PHI”). It is protected under both state and federal law. Healthcare providers and other businesses who handle PHI are required to protect that information. Like stolen PII, stolen PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity. Quite often, PII and PHI are used in conjunction by hackers.

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. 

California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
