Metromile data breachIn July 2020 cybercriminals were able to use Metromile Insurance Company’s (“Metromile”) online quote form and application process to gain unauthorized access to sensitive client data. Metromile waited until March 2021 to notify people that their information was accessed through a letter dated March 5, 2021. Sensitive information that clients provided to Metromile was exposed from July, 2020 to January, 2021, including driver’s license numbers and dates of birth, among other things.

Metromile offered two years of free identity protection services, but the initial enrollment period expired on June 30, 2021. We have no word whether that period has been extended. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
