NOTICE: If you are a California resident and you received a NOTICE OF DATA BREACH letter from Metromile Insurance Company, contact the Arnold Law Firm at (916) 777-7777 to discuss your legal options, or submit a confidential Case Evaluation form here.
In July 2020 cybercriminals were able to use Metromile Insurance Company’s (“Metromile”) online quote form and application process to gain unauthorized access to sensitive client data. Metromile waited until March 2021 to notify people that their information was accessed through a letter dated March 5, 2021. Sensitive information that clients provided to Metromile was exposed from July, 2020 to January, 2021, including driver’s license numbers and dates of birth, among other things.
Metromile offered two years of free identity protection services, but the initial enrollment period expired on June 30, 2021. We have no word whether that period has been extended. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
According to the notice that Metromile sent, the stolen personal information includes, but is not necessarily limited to, full names, driver’s license numbers, and dates of birth.
This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
California-based Metromile is an automotive insurance company which provides insurance policies to customers residing in Arizona, California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.
