Digital DNA strandBetween May 24, 2021 and July 28, 2021, DNA Diagnostics Center, Inc. (also called DDC) experienced a data breach where an unauthorized third party gained access to its servers where sensitive genetic testing data, dating back to 2004, was stored. DDC waited until August 6, 2021 to notify people that their information was accessed.

DDC is a genetic sequencing company that processes genetic data for individuals across the country. DDC provides services for paternity testing, fertility testing, lifestyle testing, pet genetic testing, and forensic testing.

What Information is Involved?

According to DDC, the following information was affected:

  • Social Security number
  • Payment information

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

DDC is offering free identity protection services. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
