Farmers Insurance Data Breach

On May 05, 2021, Farmers Insurance reported to the California State Attorney General’s office that their online automobile quoting system tool was infiltrated by a malicious party in an attempt to access individuals’ personal data.
According to the data breach notification, the incident occurred between January 20, 2021, and February 12, 2021. Farmers Insurance states that their system was accessed using personal information, such as your name, address and/or date of birth, to gain unauthorized access to your driver’s license number via Farmers’ quoting system tool.
According to Farmers Insurance, they are still investigating to determine how this incident occurred.
WHAT INFORMATION MAY HAVE BEEN INCLUDED?
- Driver’s license numbers
- First and last names
- Mailing addresses
- Dates of birth
Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Farmers Insurance is an American insurer for home and small businesses, motorcycle and auto, life, financial service products and many other coverages for consumers. While Farmers Insurance offers a variety of insurance coverages, it appears that only those who submitted an auto insurance quote were affected.
Although the breach notification does not indicate how many people were affected, Farmers Insurance states that some individuals who submitted real quote requests between January 20, 2021 and February 12, 2021 may also receive a notice of data breach.
Farmers Insurance boasts that they serve an estimated 10 million households with more than 19 million individual policies across all 50 states. They have a network of over 48,000 exclusive and independent agents and an estimated 21,000 employees.
