American Freight data breach Between November 24, 2020 and December 9, 2020, American Freight (also called American Freight, LLC.) experienced a data breach where an unauthorized third party gained access to emails where sensitive customer, vendor, and employee data was exchanged. American Freight waited until August 23, 2021 to notify people that their information was accessed through a letter.

American Freight is offering one year of free identity protection services. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

According to American Freight, the following information was affected:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Names
  • Health and medical information
  • Financial and checking account numbers
  • Payment card numbers
  • Driver’s license numbers

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”) or Protected Health Information (“PHI”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII and PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

American Freight is an Ohio-based home furnishing retailer. The data breach has impacted over 36,000 individuals.
