image/graphic of a message - system hackedOn October 10, 2023, Simpson Strong-Tie Co. Inc. (“Simpson”) discovered unauthorized access to its system. Subsequent investigations confirmed that Simpson had experienced a cybersecurity incident (“Data Breach”) during October 9 to October 11, 2023. As a result of the Data Breach, certain personally identifiable information (PII) stored in Simpson’s systems was accessed and acquired by an unauthorized party. On March 19, 2024, Simpson began the process of notifying individuals whose information might have been impacted.

Simpson, headquartered in Pleasanton, California, is a wholesale building materials company.  The company’s market capitalization is $6.1 billion, and it employs over 5,000 people across global operations.

Publicly accessible information indicates that around 5,570 individuals have been impacted by the Data Breach. Simpson has not yet released any additional details about the incident.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

The compromised information potentially included the following:

  • Full Names
  • Social Security Numbers (SSNs)

This information is referred to as your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered a part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal consequences. Stolen PII can be exploited by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
