On July 10, 2024, Janna Pharmacy LLC (“Janna”) reported an “unauthorized access/disclosure” incident to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (HHS) after discovering that an unauthorized party had accessed portions of the company’s computer network (“Data Breach”). According to its report to the HHS, the Data Breach occurred when an unauthorized individual gained access to Janna’s email server, potentially compromising confidential and sensitive consumer information. Approximately 26,000 individuals may have been impacted by this breach.
Janna Pharmacy LLC, also known as Apotheco Pharmacy Choice Torrance, is a pharmacy located in Torrance, California. It is part of the Apotheco Pharmacy Group, a larger network of pharmacies headquartered in New York, New York.
As the Data Breach was only recently announced, Janna has only disclosed very limited information so far. We are closely monitoring the ongoing investigation, and more details are expected to emerge as the company is required to notify all impacted individuals. If you received a data breach notification letter or email from Janna Pharmacy, it indicates that your information was compromised in the Data Breach.
Typically, the confidential information compromised in such cybersecurity incidents involves your name, date of birth, Social Security number, and/or medical information. Collectively, this information is considered your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
Specifically, personal medical information (a specific type of PII) is referred to as Protected Health Information (“PHI”). It is protected under both state and federal law. Healthcare providers and other businesses that handle PHI are required to protect that information. Like stolen PII, stolen PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity. Quite often, PII and PHI are used in conjunction by hackers.
The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible.
