Elephant Insurance data breachBetween March 26, 2022 and April 1, 2022, Elephant Insurance (“Elephant”) was hacked by a group of cybercriminals.  Elephant began notifying impacted people in May 2022, confirming that unauthorized third parties obtained access to Elephant’s systems and stole individuals’ names, driver’s license numbers and, for some, dates of birth. The individuals impacted by this are not necessarily Elephant customers. Your information was most likely taken by the cybercriminals by accessing Elephant’s online insurance quote system.

Elephant Insurance is a direct insurer headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Founded in 2009, Elephant is a subsidiary of Admiral Group plc, a FTSE 100 company and one of the U.K.’s leading insurers with a presence in eight countries and over 6 million customers worldwide. In total, the data of over 2.7 million individuals were compromised in this breach. If you received a data breach incident letter from Elephant you were impacted by the breach.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

According to Elephant the following information was exposed:

  • Names
  • Driver’s License Numbers
  • Dates of Birth

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

Elephant is offering 12 months of free Identity Monitoring. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
