On January 6, 2022, Pekin Insurance (“Pekin”) discovered that an unauthorized third party obtained login information to the Pekin Insurance Agent website. Between December 4, 2021 and January 6, 2022 the unauthorized third party used that information to view driver information and access private personally identifiable information.
Pekin is an insurance company located in Pekin, Illinois that provides automobile, life, homeowners and health insurance to individual customers and business insurance products to other companies. Pekin has approximately 900 direct employees and also uses a network of 7,500 independent insurance agents. In total, the data of 10,872 individuals was compromised in the breach. According to Pekin, the following information was exposed:
This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
Pekin is offering 12 months of free Single Bureau Credit Monitoring. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
