When it comes to the act of drinking and driving, most Americans acknowledge that it is dangerous and should be avoided. However, a new study released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that about 4.2 million people admitted to driving while intoxicated at least once in the 30 days prior to taking the survey.
Through an analysis of 2012 data, researchers were able to identify that the most common drunk driver is a young male, between the ages of 21 and 34, with a binge drinking problem. This group made up the bulk of the impaired driving episodes. Overall, men accounted for 80 percent of drunk drivers.
These findings led experts to believe that binge drinking is a rampant problem among young adults. A 2013 study found that 39 percent of college students reported binging on alcohol in the last month.
Additionally, the CDC study found that people who said that they sometimes don’t wear a seatbelt were three times more likely to drive while intoxicated.
The study revealed that drunk driving rates varied from state to state, often in accordance with each states laws against drunk driving. States in the Midwest had the most incidents.
According to the CDC, drunk driving car wrecks have accounted for approximately one third of all crash fatalities in the United States for the last two decades. The effects are far-reaching, including leaving devastating impacts on families, as well as economic impacts on the country.
