Another Infinity Insurance Company Data Breach

Infinity Insurance Company has recently announced a subsequent cybersecurity incident involving applications used by insurance agents and consumers to obtain online auto insurance quotes.
On March 16, 2021, Infinity Insurance Company (Infinity) notified an unknown number of individuals of a data security incident that occurred on December 26, 2020. The company claimed that an unauthorized party accessed files on “certain company servers in their network” over two days in late December.
On May 25, 2021, Infinity Insurance Company notified an unknown number of individuals of another data security incident that occurred between January 7, 2021 and April 4, 2021. Infinity/Kemper were able to determine that the security incident occurred when an unauthorized party used applications, typically used by insurance agents and consumers, to obtain online auto insurance quotes.
According to Infinity, the company is reviewing its cybersecurity program and has already made changes to secure all agent and consumer insurance quote platforms. Infinity is offering affected individuals one year of credit monitoring and identity protection services.
Infinity is a subsidiary of Kemper Insurance (Kemper).
It appears that a broad range of individuals may have been affected by this cyber security incident, including:
- Past or current customers of Kemper or Infinity
- Past or current employees of Kemper or Infinity
- Customers who requested an insurance quote through a broker affiliated with Kemper or Infinity
- Customers who used an online insurance comparison system linked to Kemper or Infinity
- Individuals involved in an insurance claim involving Kemper or Infinity
- Individuals who purchased a car where the dealer may have purchased gap coverage from Kemper or Infinity
Possible compromised personal information may include:
- Names
- Driver’s license numbers
- Addresses
- Social Security numbers / EIN numbers
- Medical leave information
- Workers compensation claim information
Infinity is a provider of auto insurance specializing in specialty or difficult-to-insure drivers. They have 2,300 employees and more than 10,000 independent agents. Annually writing about 1.5 billion premiums annually, the company is one of the largest nonstandard auto insurers in the nation.
In 2018, Kemper acquired Infinity for $1.4 billion. Kemper offers insurance for home, auto, life, health, and valuables. They employ 5,500 employees and have 20,000 independent agents and brokers throughout all 50 states.
