Protect yourself against identity theftData breaches are becoming more common. We learn about a new data breach every day. More and more, these breaches include your Social Security number. The Arnold Law Firm represents people whose information was compromised in a data breach. If you have received a data breach letter from a company that means your sensitive, personal information was compromised and may be used by identity thieves. It is important to understand how to protect yourself. One way is to monitor your credit through various agencies. But, if your Social Security number is involved, a better way is to use a more advanced identity monitoring service, such as digital security provided by Aura. The best data breach response is to not respond – but to be prepared ahead of time. We recommend taking action by purchasing digital security that monitors your Social Security number before a data breach even happens. It is important to look for an identity monitoring service that provides adequate coverage because there are many services that provide simple coverage that will not protect you. At the minimum, you should look for a service that (1) monitors credit, (2) monitors your name and Social Security number online, (3) monitors personal information, and (4) provides insurance against fraudulent activity. Insurance is important because some identity thieves will use your information to take out loans without any intention of paying the loans back, or filing taxes in your name and keeping the refund. You might be on the hook for thousands of dollars. Aura is a leader in digital security and identity protection. Aura provides a service that checks all four boxes we recommend above – and more! Aura offers three levels of digital security. All three levels monitor your credit, your name and Social Security number, personal information, and include a $1,000,000 insurance policy.  In addition to this, the most basic level also includes anti-virus for one device and WiFi security for one device. The Basic level is $10 per month, the Total level is $20 per month, and the Ultimate level is $30 per month. For more information, go to Aura’s website at www.aura.com.

Truck Accident

A 20-year-old man who had been married for just 12 days left home on his way to work. He was driving on Pleasant Grove Road in Sutter County in the early morning when he came upon a slow-moving truck. As he pulled out to pass the truck, the truck driver turned left in front of him. The young man attempted to steer back into his lane but his vehicle struck an un-flagged piece of metal extending from the back of the truck. He died in the resulting crash.

Expert witnesses brought in by the Arnold Law Firm proved that the truck, owned and operated by a hauling firm, should never have been on the highway that morning. Specifically, the rear and side turn signals did not work and the rear-view mirror was in a poor state of adjustment at the time of the collision. As a result, the driver, who had failed to properly inspect the vehicle before setting out that morning, couldn’t see the young man’s vehicle as it attempted to pass.

The poor condition of the truck, its lack of maintenance and the manner in which it was operated were found to be substantial factors in causing the collision that killed the young man. The testimony also established that the man had been making a lawful pass at the lawful speed limit and acted reasonably when he attempted to avoid the collision.

The man’s 20-year-old widow was awarded $3,767,000.77, his parents were awarded $185,131 and the family was reimbursed $11,899 in funeral expenses. Though money is a poor substitute for a young man’s life, this verdict demonstrates that drivers who endanger the lives of others will be held accountable for their actions.
