Overseas Shipholding Group Data Breach

On December 2, 2024, Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. (“OSG”) reported a significant cybersecurity incident to the Maine Attorney General’s Office. According to the notice, on October 28, 2024, OSG discovered that an unauthorized party had gained access to consumers’ private and sensitive personal information on July 31, 2024 (the “Data Breach”). The Data Breach has impacted approximately 8,085 individuals.

Recently, OSG began sending data breach notification letters to those affected by the Data Breach. Each notification letter includes one-year complimentary access to credit monitoring services provided by Equifax. 

As the announcement was made only recently, OSG has not yet disclosed additional details. If you received a data breach notification letter from OSG, it indicates that you were affected by the Data Breach. 

Based in Tampa, Florida, OSG is a provider of energy transportation services, and it delivers crude oil, petroleum products, and renewable fuels throughout the world. Founded in 1948, OSG maintains a fleet of 21 vessels and employs around 1,000 people. In 2023, OSG had a total revenue of about $450 million.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED IN THE OVERSEAS SHIPHOLDING GROUP DATA BREACH?

According to OSG, the compromised information includes:

  • Full Name
  • Social Security number
  • Passport number
  • Merchant Mariner credential number and/or Transportation Worker identification credential information

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity. 

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. 

California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
