Man using massage gun on his own shoulder. In recent years, massage guns have gained significant popularity as a convenient and effective tool for relieving muscle soreness and tension. These handheld devices, equipped with percussive or vibrational mechanisms, are promoted as an easy and safe option for a deep tissue massage experience. However, severe and debilitating injuries have been reported with the growing use of massage guns,  including vertebral artery dissection, a flap-like tear of the inner lining of the vertebral artery, which is located in the neck and supplies blood to the brain. The symptoms of vertebral artery dissection include head and neck pain and stroke symptoms such as difficulty speakingimpaired coordination and visual loss. If you suffered an injury while using a massage gun, our experienced product defect lawyers in Sacramento might be able to obtain substantial compensation for you by filing a civil action on your behalf.  Many massage guns appear to be unreasonably dangerous, and manufacturers may have failed to properly instruct consumers about the safe use of these devices. There are no upfront fees for our services, and you do not owe us anything unless we win.

What is a Massage Gun?

A massage gun is a handheld device that uses rapid percussive or vibrational movements to deliver targeted pressure to muscles. Also known as percussion massagers, these products typically feature a motorized head that vibrates while simultaneously delivering s a rapid-strike action, which is intended to increase blood flow to the desired area and loosen muscle fibers.

Key Massage Gun Features

Depending on the brand, each massage gun may have some added features, including the following:
  • Adjustable speed and intensity – Massage guns often offer multiple speed settings, allowing users to customize the intensity of the massage according to their comfort level and specific needs.
  • Interchangeable attachments – These devices typically come with a variety of interchangeable massage heads, each designed to target specific muscle groups or provide different massage techniques.
  • Rechargeable battery – Most massage guns are equipped with rechargeable batteries, making them portable and convenient for use at home, the gym, or even on the go.
One of the defining features of massage guns is that they are portable, easy to use and can be done alone.

Are Massage Guns Safe to Use?

When used properly, many massage guns are safe to use. However, there are increasing numbers of reports of alleged injuries to major arteries, nerves, lymphatic vessels, and other organs attributed to the use of massage guns. According to a recent report in the National Library of Medicine, a 27-year-old female was diagnosed with vertebral artery dissection after repetitive use of a handheld massage gun. Vertebral artery dissection occurs when a tear forms in one of the blood vessels running up the back of the neck, which can lead to a stroke.

What are the Symptoms of Vertebral Artery Dissection?

If you used a massage gun, watch for these symptoms of vertebral artery dissection:
  • Severe neck pain
  • Dizziness
  • Vision
  • Ataxia
  • Dysarthria
  • Vertigo

What Injuries Might Massage Guns Cause?

The potential risks associated with massage gun usage include the following:
  • Rhabdomyolysis – In 2021 a young woman reportedly had a severe case of rhabdomyolysis after her coach used a massage gun on her thighs.
  • Bruising and blood clots – Applying excessive pressure or using the device for extended periods can lead to bruising, hematomas or tissue damage.
  • Nerve damage – Vigorous or prolonged use of massage guns on or near nerves may result in nerve damage, leading to tingling sensations, numbness or loss of sensation in affected areas.
  • Muscle strains – Inadequate warm-up or applying excessive pressure to muscles can increase the risk of muscle strains or micro-tears, particularly if the massage gun is used improperly or at high intensity.
  • Skin irritation – Some individuals may experience skin irritation or sensitivity due to the prolonged use or repetitive movements of the massage gun on their skin.
  • Damage to broken bones – A massage gun should not be applied to a broken bone, as the pounding effect can cause the fracture to worsen.
  • Worsening inflammation – Massage guns will only make inflammation worse, which slows the healing process.
The use of a massage gun may also cause muscle contractions, which occur when your neurons send out a fight or flight signal to your muscles, rendering them unable to relax and release tension.

Who May Be Liable for Injuries Caused by Massage Guns?

Liability for massage gun injuries depends on various factors.

Product Manufacturers

A product manufacturer may be liable for a product that causes injuries because of a defective design or manufacture., or if there were no warnings regarding the risks of improper use of the product.

Retailers

Retailers have a duty to sell products that are not defective or could cause potential injuries. If a retail shop sells a massage gun yet fails to include warnings or instructions for proper use, and you suffer an injury due to improper use, you could be able to pursue compensation for the negligent actions of the retailer.

Suppliers/Distributors

Truck Accident

A 20-year-old man who had been married for just 12 days left home on his way to work. He was driving on Pleasant Grove Road in Sutter County in the early morning when he came upon a slow-moving truck. As he pulled out to pass the truck, the truck driver turned left in front of him. The young man attempted to steer back into his lane but his vehicle struck an un-flagged piece of metal extending from the back of the truck. He died in the resulting crash.

Expert witnesses brought in by the Arnold Law Firm proved that the truck, owned and operated by a hauling firm, should never have been on the highway that morning. Specifically, the rear and side turn signals did not work and the rear-view mirror was in a poor state of adjustment at the time of the collision. As a result, the driver, who had failed to properly inspect the vehicle before setting out that morning, couldn’t see the young man’s vehicle as it attempted to pass.

The poor condition of the truck, its lack of maintenance and the manner in which it was operated were found to be substantial factors in causing the collision that killed the young man. The testimony also established that the man had been making a lawful pass at the lawful speed limit and acted reasonably when he attempted to avoid the collision.

The man’s 20-year-old widow was awarded $3,767,000.77, his parents were awarded $185,131 and the family was reimbursed $11,899 in funeral expenses. Though money is a poor substitute for a young man’s life, this verdict demonstrates that drivers who endanger the lives of others will be held accountable for their actions.
