Intermountain healthcare data breachOn May 17, 2021, Intermountain Healthcare received notification from Elekta, a business associate, that an unauthorized third party gained access to one of its cloud-based servers where sensitive patient data was stored between April 6, 2021, and April 20, 2021.

In response to the incident, Intermountain Healthcare worked with Elekta and engaged a cyber-security specialist to identify all affected patients. Through investigation, it was determined that 28,628 Intermountain Healthcare patients were affected.

Three months after the incident, on July 16, 2021, Intermountain Healthcare reported the data breach to the Maine Attorney General’s office, that between April 6, 2021 and April 20, 2021, an unauthorized party gained access to Intermountain Healthcare patient’s sensitive information.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

On July 16, 2021, Intermountain Healthcare began sending out written notices to 28,628 patients, notifying them of the data breach. The notice letters include the following affected information:

  • First and last names
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Insurance card
  • Other identification cards
  • Demographic Information
  • Scanned image files
  • Medical Images
  • Medical Intake forms

Intermountain Healthcare is a Utah-based healthcare provider with a team of nearly 40,000 employees serving the medical needs of individuals across the Intermountain West, primarily in Utah, Idaho and Nevada. Intermountain Healthcare has 215 clinics, a medical group of 2,400 physicians, 3,800 affiliated physicians, 24 hospitals including; homecare and telecare, health insurance plans covering approximately 900,000 people and more.

Intermountain Healthcare’s business associate, Elekta, is a Sweden-based leader in precision radiation medicine. Elekta provides radiotherapy solutions for cancer cure and brain disorders through personalized radiotherapy treatments.
