Data Breach of Auris Health, Inc. Employee’s Email Exposes Sensitive Information

On March 15, 2020, an unauthorized party gained access to the email account of an employee of surgical robot developer Auris Health, Inc. (Auris). The company has not disclosed when the security incident was first discovered or how long the malevolent actor had access to the account.
On January 27, 2021, Auris began to notify an unknown number of affected individuals about the cyberattack. Personal information compromised in the data breach includes:
- Full names
- Passport numbers
- Health information
- Social Security numbers
- Health insurance numbers
- Payment card information
- Financial account numbers
- Tax identification numbers
Auris has notified law enforcement and is reportedly working to remediate system vulnerabilities and enhance security controls. The company is offering two years of credit and identity monitoring services to affected individuals. They have established a toll-free phone number with Equifax: 1-800-605-5729. Founded in 2007, Auris develops advanced endoscopic surgical tools used for lung cancer diagnosing and targeting with minimal intrusion. Based in Redwood City, California, the company has an estimated 400 employees.
In 2019, Johnson & Johnson’s robotic surgery and medical device division, Ethicon, purchased Auris for $3.4 billion. Johnson & Johnson is a diversified healthcare global giant with more than 250 companies located in 60 countries. Annual revenues exceed $82 billion.
