Brain Injury Awareness Month
The Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA) is devoted to improving the quality of life for brain injury victims across the United States. One of the cornerstones of their program is to decrease the stigma that is associated with brain injuries by conducting outreach in communities all over the country. In addition to falls, which account for 40 percent of traumatic brain injuries, other common causes include:- Auto accidents
- Assaults
- Explosive devices
Brain Injury Prevention Tips
Any jolt or blow to the head that changes the normal functioning of the brain is considered a traumatic brain injury. Such injuries can be caused by both minor and more serious accidents. Children, in particular, are susceptible to brain injuries sustained when participating in sports. BIAA recommends the use of safety apparel and proper head gear to minimize brain injuries in sports, including:- Hockey
- Football
- Cycling
- Baseball
- Skiing
- Wrestling
