data breachOn January 4, 2022, South Denver Cardiology Associates (“SDCA”) discovered that an unauthorized third party accessed their internal network.  Between January 2, 2022 and January 5, 2022 the unauthorized third party used that information to view patient information and access private personally identifiable information.

South Denver Cardiology Associates is a health care provider and cardiology practice that provides cardiology services and healthcare to individual patients.  SDCA has approximately 59 doctors, nurse practitioners, and leadership staff, as well as many other direct employees.  In total, the data of 287,652 individuals was compromised in the data incident. What Information is Involved?

According to SDCA, the following information was exposed:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Names
  • Dates of Birth
  • Driver’s License numbers
  • Patient Account numbers
  • Health Insurance information
  • Clinical information (physician names, dates, and types of service, and diagnoses)

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”) and protected health information (“PHI”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII and PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
