On January 4, 2022, South Denver Cardiology Associates (“SDCA”) discovered that an unauthorized third party accessed their internal network. Between January 2, 2022 and January 5, 2022 the unauthorized third party used that information to view patient information and access private personally identifiable information.
South Denver Cardiology Associates is a health care provider and cardiology practice that provides cardiology services and healthcare to individual patients. SDCA has approximately 59 doctors, nurse practitioners, and leadership staff, as well as many other direct employees. In total, the data of 287,652 individuals was compromised in the data incident. If you received a data breach incident letter from South Denver Cardiology Associates, you were impacted by the breach.
According to SDCA, the following information was exposed:
This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”) and protected health information (“PHI”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII and PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
