Herff Jones Reports Data Breach

On May 12, 2021, Herff Jones confirmed on their website that they have experienced a data breach that involved certain customers’ payment information.
According to Herff Jones, they have taken immediate action to temporarily disable its payment functions; however, customers are still able to place orders without submitting payment at this time.
WHAT INFORMATION MAY HAVE BEEN INCLUDED?
- Names
- Credit and/or debit card numbers
- Bank account and routing numbers
WHO WAS AFFECTED?
A complete list of affected institutions has not yet been released, and the number of data breach victims is expected to continue to grow. The following institutions have confirmed a data breach involving their students:
- Boston University
- Purdue University
- The University of Delaware
- University of Southern California
- The University of Houston
- The University of Illinois
- Towson University
In early May 2021, an online discussion started to spread quickly among graduating seniors across the country who noticed suspicious activity on their financial accounts after ordering graduation regalia from Herff Jones.
Indianapolis-based Herff Jones is the leading provider of graduation and educational products and services designed to inspire achievement and create experiences for high school and college students. Herff Jones’ products include class rings and jewelry, caps and gowns, yearbooks, diplomas, frames and announcements as well as motivation and recognition programs.
Reportedly, Herff Jones is sending out notices of data breach to an unknown number of impacted customers, who have made a purchase through the Herff Jones website using their debit or credit cards, or using an electronic funds transfer.
Herff Jones maintains production facilities across the United States as well as in Canada and has a network of approximately 9,000 employees and independent sales representatives. In 2011, Herff Jones merged with Varsity Brands, owner of the cheerleading and school spirit company Varsity Spirit. In 2014, Herff Jones rebranded itself under the Varsity Brands name, with Herff Jones becoming a subsidiary. Herff Jones has an estimated annual revenue in excess of $708 million.
