Multi-vehicle accidents have become an increasing concern in Sacramento. On September 13th, a severe accident involving multiple vehicles occurred on Arcade Boulevard in the Hagginwood area, causing significant damage and injuries. With the rise of such incidents, understanding your legal rights under California personal injury law is more crucial than ever. If you or a loved one has been involved in a car accident, the Arnold Law Firm is always here to help you navigate these challenging times.  What is a Multi-Vehicle Accident?  A multi-vehicle accident, commonly referred to as a “pile-up,” involves three or more vehicles in a chain reaction. These accidents are typically caused by a combination of factors, such as poor weather conditions, distracted driving, or sudden braking. In California, determining liability in such accidents can be complex due to the multiple parties involved. Understanding your rights and how to pursue a personal injury claim is essential to ensure fair compensation for your injuries and damages.  Key Factors in Determining Liability in Multi-Vehicle Accidents  Liability in multi-vehicle accidents often depends on a thorough investigation of the crash’s circumstances. In California, the “comparative negligence” rule applies, which means that each party involved in the accident may be assigned a percentage of fault. For example, if a driver was speeding and rear-ended another vehicle, that driver could be partially or fully liable for the resulting damages. However, if another driver was texting and driving, their share of fault could also be significant. The Arnold Law Firm has extensive experience handling such cases and can guide you through the legal intricacies to ensure you receive the compensation you deserve.  3 Steps to Take After a Multi-Vehicle Accident in Sacramento
  1. Seek Immediate Medical Attention: Your health is the top priority. Even if you believe your injuries are minor, it is vital to get checked by a healthcare professional. Some injuries, such as whiplash or internal bleeding, may not be immediately apparent.
  2. Document the Scene: Take photographs of the accident scene, including all vehicles involved, road conditions, and any visible injuries. This documentation can serve as critical evidence in your personal injury claim.

Truck Accident

A 20-year-old man who had been married for just 12 days left home on his way to work. He was driving on Pleasant Grove Road in Sutter County in the early morning when he came upon a slow-moving truck. As he pulled out to pass the truck, the truck driver turned left in front of him. The young man attempted to steer back into his lane but his vehicle struck an un-flagged piece of metal extending from the back of the truck. He died in the resulting crash.

Expert witnesses brought in by the Arnold Law Firm proved that the truck, owned and operated by a hauling firm, should never have been on the highway that morning. Specifically, the rear and side turn signals did not work and the rear-view mirror was in a poor state of adjustment at the time of the collision. As a result, the driver, who had failed to properly inspect the vehicle before setting out that morning, couldn’t see the young man’s vehicle as it attempted to pass.

The poor condition of the truck, its lack of maintenance and the manner in which it was operated were found to be substantial factors in causing the collision that killed the young man. The testimony also established that the man had been making a lawful pass at the lawful speed limit and acted reasonably when he attempted to avoid the collision.

The man’s 20-year-old widow was awarded $3,767,000.77, his parents were awarded $185,131 and the family was reimbursed $11,899 in funeral expenses. Though money is a poor substitute for a young man’s life, this verdict demonstrates that drivers who endanger the lives of others will be held accountable for their actions.
