The study, conducted by auto insurance comparison site QuoteWizard, sampled incident statistics from users of its website with more than 2 million data points from 2016. To measure driver standards, QuoteWizard weighted the incident counts in each of the 75 cities with its occurrence percentage. The study’s final rankings are sums of weighted means calculated from the following incident types:
  • Traffic accidents
  • Speeding tickets
  • DUIs
  • Traffic citations (running a red light, using a cellphone while driving)

The Study’s Rankings

The study’s findings were ranked in the order of worst to best. Cities with higher numerical rankings were found to have better drivers than cities with a lower numerical ranking.

3 Worst Cities

According to QuoteWizard, the top three cities with the worst drivers in the U.S. are:

1. Sacramento

Sacramento received the number one ranking in QuoteWizard’s study due to its high rate of traffic citations. The city is also ranked fourth in the U.S. for the number of traffic accidents and DUI arrests.

2. Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, UT, followed behind Sacramento as the city with the second worst drivers in the U.S. due to the high number of speeding tickets issued by law enforcement. Salt Lake City drivers also have the fifth highest ranking of traffic citations issued, according to QuoteWizard’s study.

3. Riverside

Riverside, CA, was named the third worst city in the U.S. and received the third highest ranking for DUI arrests on QuoteWizard’s ranking list.

3 Best Cities

Not all cities received bad reviews for their residents driving standards. The three lowest-ranked cities with the safest drivers in QuoteWizard’s study are:

1. Detroit

Detroit, MI, ranked 75th in the list of worst drivers in the U.S., making it the safest city in terms of driving. Detroit has the lowest accident rate out of the cities included in the study and also has the second lowest number of speeding citations issued to the state’s drivers.

2. Providence

Providence, RI, was ranked 74th by the study, receiving the title of the city with the second safest drivers in the U.S. According to the study’s data, Providence drivers have the lowest number of speeding tickets and traffic citations issued in the U.S.

3. Orlando

The study named Orlando, FL, as the third safest city for driving by naming it to the 73rd spot on its list. Although Orlando suffers from issues of heavy traffic and uninsured drivers, it has the second-lowest accident rate throughout the nation, according to QuoteWizard’s study.

Truck Accident

A 20-year-old man who had been married for just 12 days left home on his way to work. He was driving on Pleasant Grove Road in Sutter County in the early morning when he came upon a slow-moving truck. As he pulled out to pass the truck, the truck driver turned left in front of him. The young man attempted to steer back into his lane but his vehicle struck an un-flagged piece of metal extending from the back of the truck. He died in the resulting crash.

Expert witnesses brought in by the Arnold Law Firm proved that the truck, owned and operated by a hauling firm, should never have been on the highway that morning. Specifically, the rear and side turn signals did not work and the rear-view mirror was in a poor state of adjustment at the time of the collision. As a result, the driver, who had failed to properly inspect the vehicle before setting out that morning, couldn’t see the young man’s vehicle as it attempted to pass.

The poor condition of the truck, its lack of maintenance and the manner in which it was operated were found to be substantial factors in causing the collision that killed the young man. The testimony also established that the man had been making a lawful pass at the lawful speed limit and acted reasonably when he attempted to avoid the collision.

The man’s 20-year-old widow was awarded $3,767,000.77, his parents were awarded $185,131 and the family was reimbursed $11,899 in funeral expenses. Though money is a poor substitute for a young man’s life, this verdict demonstrates that drivers who endanger the lives of others will be held accountable for their actions.
