On December 28, 2020, a ransomware attack encrypted the servers and workstations of the thyssenkrupp Materials group of companies (thyssenkrupp) in the United States and Canada. The unauthorized party gained access to system data that included human resources information, such as:

- Addresses
- Social Security numbers
- Direct deposit information
- Birthdates
- Health information
- Payroll information
- Employee contact information
The company currently has more than 4,000 employees. The data of an unknown number of former employees may have also been compromised in the incident.
thyssenkrupp has reportedly increased the monitoring of their IT networks and is improving access controls. The company is offering two years of credit monitoring services to affected individuals and has set up a toll-free number to answer questions about this incident: 800-475-1420.
