digital lockOn March 16, 2021, Royal Dutch Shell, PLC (Shell) confirmed that they were the latest high-profile company affected by an extensive Accellion data breach. Accellion is a California-based, third-party vendor that provides file-transfer services.

According to Shell, “an unauthorized party gained access to various files during a limited window of time.” An undisclosed number of Shell subsidiaries were impacted. The company claims the data breach did not affect Shell’s core IT systems.

Shell is currently notifying affected individuals and has reported the security incident to the authorities. The oil and gas international giant continues to investigate the cyberattack but stated that the breach exposed business and personal information records for an undisclosed number of stakeholders, as well as other yet-undefined individuals.

While the nature and volume of the compromised data also remain unknown, other companies previously known to be involved in the Accellion incident have reported exposure of highly sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and medical records.

The fifth-largest company in the world, Shell is a multinational group of petrochemical and energy companies with more than 86,000 employees in over 70 countries. The estimated 2020 revenues were $180 billion USD.
