Study Ranks Sacramento Drivers as the Worst in the Nation

male driver yellingA new study that ranked the standards of drivers in 75 major U.S. cities named Sacramento as the city with the worst and most dangerous drivers in the nation.

The study, conducted by auto insurance comparison site QuoteWizard, sampled incident statistics from users of its website with more than 2 million data points from 2016. To measure driver standards, QuoteWizard weighted the incident counts in each of the 75 cities with its occurrence percentage. The study’s final rankings are sums of weighted means calculated from the following incident types:

  • Traffic accidents
  • Speeding tickets
  • DUIs
  • Traffic citations (running a red light, using a cellphone while driving)

The Study’s Rankings

The study’s findings were ranked in the order of worst to best. Cities with higher numerical rankings were found to have better drivers than cities with a lower numerical ranking.

3 Worst Cities

According to QuoteWizard, the top three cities with the worst drivers in the U.S. are:

1. Sacramento

Sacramento received the number one ranking in QuoteWizard’s study due to its high rate of traffic citations. The city is also ranked fourth in the U.S. for the number of traffic accidents and DUI arrests.

2. Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, UT, followed behind Sacramento as the city with the second worst drivers in the U.S. due to the high number of speeding tickets issued by law enforcement. Salt Lake City drivers also have the fifth highest ranking of traffic citations issued, according to QuoteWizard’s study.

3. Riverside

Riverside, CA, was named the third worst city in the U.S. and received the third highest ranking for DUI arrests on QuoteWizard’s ranking list.

3 Best Cities

Not all cities received bad reviews for their residents driving standards. The three lowest-ranked cities with the safest drivers in QuoteWizard’s study are:

1. Detroit

Detroit, MI, ranked 75th in the list of worst drivers in the U.S., making it the safest city in terms of driving.
Detroit has the lowest accident rate out of the cities included in the study and also has the second lowest number of speeding citations issued to the state’s drivers.

2. Providence

Providence, RI, was ranked 74th by the study, receiving the title of the city with the second safest drivers in the U.S. According to the study’s data, Providence drivers have the lowest number of speeding tickets and traffic citations issued in the U.S.

3. Orlando

The study named Orlando, FL, as the third safest city for driving by naming it to the 73rd spot on its list. Although Orlando suffers from issues of heavy traffic and uninsured drivers, it has the second-lowest accident rate throughout the nation, according to QuoteWizard’s study.
