stock img for Progressive Casualty Data Breach blogOn or about August 1, 2023, Progressive publicly announced that it suffered a data breach impacting 347,100 consumers and informing consumers that their Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”) was accessed by unauthorized individuals when some of Progressive’s third-party vendors began improperly sharing their Progressive access credentials with unauthorized individuals who performed the employees’ call center job duties (“Data Breach”). Progressive learned of the Data Breach on or around May 19, 2023 when it received written notification from one of its third-party service providers regarding the Data Breach.

On August 1, 2023, Progressive disclosed that it “subsequently learned that some of the third-party service provider’s employees improperly shared their Progressive access credentials with unauthorized individuals who performed the employees’ call center job duties. This gave the unauthorized individuals access to certain personal information for some of our customers. Based on information from the third-party service provider, the earliest date of employment of any of the potentially involved employees by the third-party service provider was May 2021, but most were hired during or after the fall of 2022.” Progressive stated that the types of PII accessed by the unauthorized individuals included “name[s], address[es], driver’s license number[s], email address[es], phone number[s], [Extra1], [Extra2], [Extra3], and date[s] of birth.”

Progressive is an insurance company based out of Mayfield Village, Ohio. Progressive offers a range of insurance types, including personal and commercial auto, motorcycle, boat, and recreational vehicle insurance. Progressive is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol “PGR.” Progressive Insurance employs more than 49,000 people and generates approximately $48 billion in annual revenue. According to the Progressive’s public announcement, approximately 347,100 Progressive customers throughout California and the United States were exposed. If you received a Notice of Security Incident Letter from Progressive, then you were impacted by the Data Breach.

Progressive stated in its announcement that it plans to offer credit monitoring and identity protection services to victims of the Data Breach through Experian IdentityWorksSM for two years.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

According to Progressive, the following information was exposed:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Email address
  • Telephone Number
  • Date of Birth

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
