In February 2022, Faneuil reported that, on August 18, 2021, the company was the target of a ransomware attack where unauthorized parties accessed and encrypted certain files on its network. Faneuil engaged with the criminal hackers and paid them a ransom in exchange for their promise to destroy the obtained data. Faneuil, apparently, trusts these criminals to keep their word that they will not release your private information.
Faneuil is a business solutions company focusing on providing corporate clients with a range of services, focusing on how a business interacts with its customer base. Among other things, Faneuil handles customer service and technical support on behalf of its clients and currently employs approximately 5,500 people. The company is based in Hampton, Virginia.
According to Christie, the following information was exposed:
This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protection and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
