On August 4, 2021, Eskenazi Health, a hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, experienced a data breach where an unauthorized third party gained access to its servers where sensitive patient data was stored. Eskenazi Health informed patients of the breach through a substitute notice on their website, which was posted on October 1, 2021. Eskenazi Health will also be mailing letters to affected individuals.
Eskenazi Health has reported that 1,515,918 individuals were affected by this breach. According to Eskenazi Health, the personal information of patients and employees has shown up on the Dark Web.
According to Eskenazi Health, the following information was affected:
This information is called your Protected Health Information (“PHI”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
Eskenazi Health is offering free identity protection services. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for identity protection services as soon as possible.
