In January 2022, Christie Business Holdings Company, P.C. (“Christie Clinic”) discovered that an unauthorized third party obtained access to Christie Clinic’s servers and the files on those servers including the Personally Identifiable Information and Personal Health Information of its clients.  Between July 14, 2021 and August 19, 2021 the unauthorized third party used that access to view customer information and access private personally identifiable information.

Christie Clinic is one of the largest physician-owned, multi-specialty group medical practices in Illinois.  Christie Clinic is located in Champaign, Illinois.  It provides medical treatment and personalized healthcare to the East Central Illinois Region. Christie Clinic has approximately 1,015 employees.  In total, the data of at least five hundred thousand (500,000) individuals was compromised in the breach. What Information is Involved?

According to Christie, the following information was exposed:

• Social Security numbers
• Names
• Addresses
• Medical Information
• Health Insurance Information

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”) and your Personal Health Information (“PHI”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII and PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.
