CAL Automotive Data Breach

On September 18, 2021, CAL Automotive (also called Certified Automotive Lease Corp.) experienced a data breach where an unauthorized third party gained access to its servers where sensitive customer data was stored. CAL Automotive waited until October 26, 2021 to notify people that their information was accessed.

CAL Automotive does indirect automotive leasing and primarily does business in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

What Information is Involved?

According to CAL Automotive, the following information was affected:

  • Name
  • Financial Account Number
  • Credit or Debit Card Number, including security codes, access codes, passwords, or PINs for the account

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

CAL Automotive is offering free identity protection services. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
