U.S. Bank Alerts Customers to Exposure of SSNs, Other Sensitive Information in Data Breach

social security data breachAdditional details have surfaced regarding the recent U.S. Bank National Association (U.S. Bank) data breach. A new version of the NOTICE OF DATA BREACH includes more sensitive personal information, including Social Security Numbers (SSN), increasing potential damages resulting from the security incident.

On July 30, 2020, a computer server containing personally identifiable information was physically stolen from a U.S. Bank corporate office in Ontario, California. The data breach was discovered weeks later; on August 21, 2020.

On September 18, 2020, U.S. Bank began notifying affected consumers without explanation of the delay. More than 14,000 U.S. Bank customers were affected by the security incident. The breached data reportedly includes:

  • Names
  • Account numbers
  • Social Security Numbers (SSN)
  • Driver license numbers
  • Financial account numbers
  • Credit and/or debit card numbers
  • Security codes
  • Access codes
  • Account personal identification numbers (PIN)

The server allegedly contained information on commercial loans and the associated individuals tied to those loans.

U.S. Bank is owned by U.S. Bancorp, with 74,000 employees and $488 billion in assets. The Minneapolis-based financial institution is the fifth-largest commercial bank in the United States.
