On January 20, 2020, The UPS Store, a San Diego-based subsidiary of United Parcel Service (UPS), notified customers that an unauthorized party gained entry into the email accounts of some store locations between approximately September 19, 2019 and January 13, 2020.
The UPS Store has initiated an investigation to assess the scope of the phishing incident, identifying over 300 victims by the date of their announcement. No involvement with any point-of-sale transactions at The UPS Store locations has been identified.
The UPS Store runs the largest franchise system of retail shipping, print, postal, and business service centers in the United States, with 5,000 locations globally.
Small business customers - not just individual consumers - may have been impacted. The UPS Store provides an array of corporate services, including electronic file access, document printing, and copying. The UPS Store also offers an Exchanges Program designed to fulfill the role of a small business store front, corporate office, and warehouse for exchanging merchandise, parts, or other items.
Individual and business customers routinely send document files to The UPS Store by email for services. Because documents are shared via email, the data breach not only exposed names and email addresses, it compromised sensitive information within documents emailed to store locations. The exposed information varies depending on the documents contained within emails received by the impacted email accounts.
The UPS Store confirmed that the data breached includes government-issued identification and financial documents. It is not yet known what possible fraud or misuse of this information may have occurred.
Because The UPS Store provides services integral to small business functions and transactions, the personal information of the customers of small business victims may have also been compromised.
Call the Arnold Law Firm at (916) 777-7777 as soon as possible if you sent an email to The UPS Store between September 19, 2019 and January 13, 2020. Our experienced attorneys can help you determine whether your confidential information was breached and your legal options.
