On October 20, 2020, Methodist Hospital of Southern California (MHSC) notified patients of a data breach involving third-party technology vendor Blackbaud.
On May 20, 2020, Blackbaud discovered a hack that resulted in the theft of sensitive personal information of individuals associated with their clients, including the Methodist Hospital Foundation, a nonprofit corporation that organizes charitable funds for MHSC.
The security incident began on February 7, 2020, and continued until it was discovered in May. MHSC was notified of the security incident on September 9, 2020.
The Blackbaud ransomware attack may prove to be one of the most extensive, complex data breaches of 2020, as the list of affected organizations (and individuals) continues to grow months after the incident was first discovered.
