(“V12 Software”) filed a data breach notice with the Texas Attorney General’s Office upon discovering unauthorized access to their systems. This cybersecurity incident (“Data Breach”) enabled an unauthorized party to access customers’ Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”).

V12 Software, headquartered in San Jose, California, is a company known for creating software for car dealerships to manage and market their business. With more than 177 employees and generating around $6 million annually, V12 Software plays a significant role in the auto industry.

According to publicly available information, the Data Breach has impacted approximately 286,396 individuals. It remains unclear whether V12 Software has sent any data breach notice letters to affected individuals.

The news about the Data Breach was only recently announced, and additional information is yet to be revealed. For now, V12 Software has not shared details about the incident on its website. Moreover, the company’s filing with the Texas Attorney General’s Office provides only limited insights into the events leading up to the breach.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

The compromised information potentially included the following:

  • Social Security Numbers (SSNs)
  • Driver’s License

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered a part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
