Sacramento Zofran Birth Injury Attorneys
The Arnold Law Firm is currently pursuing cases involving birth defects linked to expectant mothers with severe morning sickness who were prescribed Zofran (ondansetron). Various studies have linked Zofran to babies born with heart-related birth defects and other congenital malformations such as cleft palate and cleft lip.
Many women or families of affected children may be filing lawsuits related to birth defects caused by Zofran use and may be eligible for significant compensation for those injuries.
Zofran Use During Pregnancy Not Approved by FDA
Zofran was only approved by FDA for the prevention of nausea or vomiting associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy as well as in some instances following surgery.
The anti-vomiting nausea medication manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) was never approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment to reduce nausea when a woman is pregnant, especially during the first trimester. However, many women have received the medication as an off-label prescription. Doctors may prescribe medication for off-label uses if the benefits of the drug outweigh the risk. However, manufacturers are not allowed to market the drug for unapproved uses.
Many expecting mothers were prescribed Zofran during the first trimester when nausea is most severe. Unfortunately, this is also when the fetus is most vulnerable to damage caused by medications.
Zofran Birth Defects
The FDA warns that Zofran may cause severe heart and lung defects in the unborn babies of mothers taking these drugs during their pregnancy.
Birth defects include:
- Heart Defects / Cardiac Murmurs and Arrhythmia
- Cleft Palate
- Skeletal abnormalities
- Low fetal birth weight
- Spontaneous abortion
Cleft palate and cleft lip are a result of incomplete formation of the upper portion of the roof of the mouth and front of the upper jaw. This essentially results in a hole that leaves the sinuses open to the mouth and may create significant difficulties for the infant or child in eating and breathing.
Zofran Side Effects
According to the FDA, Zofran may also cause dangerous heart problems in the expecting mother herself, including drug-induced QT prolongation and Torsade de Pointes, which can be lethal.
Symptoms of Zofran heart problems include:
- Shortness of breath
- Palpitations & Dizziness
- Pounding in the chest
In addition to the risk of heart arrhythmia, Zofran has also been known to cause the following side effects:
- Allergic reaction
- Agitation or anxiety
- Urinating less than usual
You May Be Entitled to Compensation
If your child has developed a birth defect or a loved one has developed a heart rhythm problem after the mother of that child took Zofran during pregnancy, you could be entitled to substantial compensation in a dangerous drug lawsuit.
