Rising Temps in Sacramento Can Contribute to Tire Failure

Sacramento-area weather was blisteringly hot recently, with several days reaching triple-digit temperatures. Since summer officially began on June 21, locals can expect the heat to continue. Not only are high temperatures uncomfortable, the extreme heat presents driving concerns.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) released a number of safety tips for beating the heat, including vehicle preparation tips. Tire care is especially important during this time of year as excess heat can increase the risk of tire failure and blowouts.
Tire blowout season, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), runs from May through October.
Tire failure is most often caused by worn tires, and blowouts are more likely to occur during the daylight hours when a vehicle is traveling on the highway. When the air temperature gets hotter, tires tend to inflate. When they inflate and come into contact with hot surfaces, the friction and high speeds can lead to a blowout.
Poor tire inflation is one of the most common causes of a tire blowout. It is estimated that more than half the vehicles on the road have at least one tire that is underinflated. Another cause of tire failure is overloading, which can wear a tire down at a faster rate. Drivers should always check how much their vehicle can haul before loading it up.
The CHP also suggests that motorists be prepared for a vehicle breakdown by carrying an emergency kit that includes water, an extra cellphone charger, jumper cables, flashlights, and even snacks.
According to the NHTSA, about 78,000 accidents each year are caused by tire blowouts. Approximately 400 of those tire blowout accidents are fatal. Though many of these tire failures are a result of poor vehicle maintenance, a product defect could also cause a tire blowout, as could a mechanic’s failure to ensure that a new tire was properly inflated.
