A new study that ranked the standards of drivers in 75 major U.S. cities named Sacramento as the city with the worst and most dangerous drivers in the nation.
The study, conducted by auto insurance comparison site QuoteWizard, sampled incident statistics from users of its website with more than 2 million data points from 2016. To measure driver standards, QuoteWizard weighted the incident counts in each of the 75 cities with its occurrence percentage. The study’s final rankings are sums of weighted means calculated from the following incident types:
- Traffic accidents
- Speeding tickets
- Traffic citations (running a red light, using a cellphone while driving)
The Study’s Rankings
The study’s findings were ranked in the order of worst to best. Cities with higher numerical rankings were found to have better drivers than cities with a lower numerical ranking.
3 Worst Cities
According to QuoteWizard, the top three cities with the worst drivers in the U.S. are:
Sacramento received the number one ranking in QuoteWizard’s study due to its high rate of traffic citations. The city is also ranked fourth in the U.S. for the number of traffic accidents and DUI arrests.
2. Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City, UT, followed behind Sacramento as the city with the second worst drivers in the U.S. due to the high number of speeding tickets issued by law enforcement. Salt Lake City drivers also have the fifth highest ranking of traffic citations issued, according to QuoteWizard’s study.
Riverside, CA, was named the third worst city in the U.S. and received the third highest ranking for DUI arrests on QuoteWizard’s ranking list.
