National Whistleblower Appreciation Day Is On July 30, 2014

A young but quite historic national appreciation day was announced in 2013 by the U.S. Senate. On July 30, 2014, it will be the second National Whistleblower Appreciation Day.
All 100 members of the U.S. Senate unanimously agreed to pass the resolution that establishes the day in 2013. The goal was to encourage members of the public and remind them that they have a duty to combat fraud and abuse that costs the federal government billions of dollars each year.
National Whistleblower Day celebrates the courage of citizens who see fraud and want to put a stop to it. In many cases, whistleblowers can compromise their careers and their family's finances when they report fraud.
Fortunately, under the False Claims Act, whistleblowers who successfully report fraud and abuse that results in a settlement or judgment for the government are entitled to a portion of the proceeds. For some whistleblowers, this reward has run into the tens of millions.
There are some serial whistleblowers, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports, such as Doctor William LaCorte, who routinely pursue lawsuits under the U.S. False Claims Act. Unlike most whistleblowers however, Dr. LaCorte has been able to personally recover $35 million and hundreds of millions of dollars for the federal government.
As a physician, Dr. LaCorte is in a prime position to notice billing discrepancies and alert the Department of justice that fraud is being committed. The pharmaceutical companies and doctors such as Dr. LaCorte have differing perspectives on whether whistleblowers are actually contributing to fraud prevention or fabricating cases in order to profit.
As the WSJ reported, 74 percent of all cases filed by whistleblowers do not result in a recovery. It may be that whistleblowers are useful as a deterrent by helping the government send a message that anyone anywhere within the company or in the wider public can report fraud.
One thing is clear, the prominence of recent whistleblowers and the creation of a national day of appreciation, will only contribute to increased citizen awareness. At Arnold Law Firm, our Sacramento whistleblower attorneys are committed to ensuring that citizens who have information about wrongdoing have access to resources that they need and that all of their questions are answered.
