Chinese-made Laminate Dangers
A 60 Minutes investigation first broke the story in March of this year after testing samples of the Chinese-made Lumber Liquidators laminate flooring. They found that all but one flooring sample had high levels of formaldehyde.
The CBS team also led an undercover investigation into the Chinese factories that manufacture the products and discovered that the factory owners openly admitted that the laminate flooring is not compliant with California's stringent air quality standards.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) requires that all composite wood products emit less than a certain level of formaldehyde into the air. Products who fall within that limit must label their product as CARB Phase 2 compliant, those who do not, cannot be sold in the state.
Lumber Liquidators labeled its Chinese-made laminate flooring as CARB Phase 2 compliant even though it appears that the product did not meet these safety standards.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also announced an active investigation into the situation in March.
In June, Lumber Liquidators, the nations largest retailer of wood flooring, announced that it would stop selling the Chinese-made products.
